Moving Day Made Easy

Moving can be one of the most stressful parts of buying a home. Whether it’s down the street or across the country, it’s important to be prepared. We created a quick guide to make sure you get your move done right.

Planning the move

To-do lists

Building to-do lists can help with some of the anxiety around moving. Using apps like Asana or Trello (which have free versions available) will ensure you don’t miss anything. Once you have a list of items to tackle, it can feel much more manageable.

Get yourself some boxes

Get some moving boxes early. You can look on Craigslist for cheap or free moving boxes as many people have no use for them once they are done. If you are looking for something sturdier and sustainable, you can purchase large plastic tubs.

Make sure you label each box with the contents and the room it should end up in. This will make the moving process much easier and save you significant time when it comes to unloading and unpacking.

What can you get done early?

There are many items you can get done before your move, including:

  • Scheduling moving vans and permits
  • Organizing a transfer of address with your current service providers
  • Scheduling installation for internet, cable, etc.
  • Packing less important items

Moving Day

Room by room

When loading and unloading the moving truck you will want to do it room by room. Make sure you load the less important rooms first and the more important rooms last. This will help when you unload the truck so that you can access the essentials immediately.

When unpacking your items, focus on a room at a time. You may need to spread unpacking over an entire week and this will ensure you get the most important rooms done first.

Protect the floors

Protect your floors from being scratched with plastic, cardboard or blankets. When moving large and heavy items of furniture, you run the risk of these being dropped or dragged and destroying your beautiful new floors. Taking a quick second to lay down a protective layer will help prevent this.

Don’t Look Back

Time to decorate

Decorating your new home is one of the most exciting parts of moving. If you find yourself or the kids missing your old home, decorating can help. Asking your children to help with the decorating process is a great way to help build excitement about the move and the new home.

Update the essentials

Make sure you update the essentials. This can include:

  • Healthcare providers
  • Medical insurance
  • Driver’s license
  • Mail
  • Car insurance
